Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT)

Lady with a laptop on a red couchLaser ablation of varicose veins is very similar to radio-frequency ablation in that it is a minimally invasive, local anaesthetic procedure to treat truncal venous incompetence.  The technique is also similar in that a small laser fibre is introduced into the diseased vein through a small skin incision and heat is delivered to the vein wall using laser energy, causing the vein to seal closed.  As with RF ablation, patients can usually walk out of hospital within an hour of treatment and return to normal activities within a few days.  There is minimal or no scarring although research shows there is more bruising and discomfort for a week or two when compared to VNUS closure.  After treatment you will be required to wear a full length compression stocking permanently for the first 5-7 days and then daytime only for the next 7-10 days.  This treatment may be performed alone or in some cases may be combined with some stab avulsions (local excisions) or injection sclerotherapy to achieve optimal cosmetic results.
